Job software vs a custom system
Buy it, or build the gap?
Off-the-shelf job software covers the standard work. A custom build makes sense for the paperwork and connections it leaves behind.

- ~120%
- revenue growth against plan with no rise in the wage bill, Kingsland Fabrications (shop floor system and AI)
- 2 hrs/day
- handed back to a supervisor by automating paint notes
Buy first if a tool does the job. Build only the gaps: drawings retyped into paint notes, invoices matched by hand, stock kept on a whiteboard. Most firms need a bit of both, not a full rebuild.

| Dimension | Off-the-shelf job software | Custom system | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to get going | Days or weeks to set up and train. | Weeks for a first useful piece, longer for a full system. | Off-the-shelf job software |
| Cost | A monthly fee per user, plus setup. | Our custom builds start from £5,000 excluding VAT, plus support. | Depends |
| Standard jobs, schedules and invoices | What these tools are built for. | Rebuilding this from scratch is rarely worth it. | Off-the-shelf job software |
| Your own paperwork | Drawings, cut lists and supplier formats usually still get typed in by hand. | Can read your drawings and documents and fill in the job for a person to check. | Custom system |
| Connecting your other systems | Works with what the supplier supports. | Can connect to your accounts, stock or existing job software where they allow it. | Custom system |
| Updates and support | Handled by the supplier. | Needs someone responsible for fixes, backups and changes. | Off-the-shelf job software |
The real-world calls.
A reactive service or maintenance firm with fairly standard jobs
Choose: Off-the-shelf job software. Buy a good job management tool. Don't pay anyone to rebuild something that already exists.
A fabricator whose supervisors retype drawings and cut lists
Choose: Custom system. That's the gap off-the-shelf tools leave. At Kingsland Fabrications, automating paint notes gave a supervisor up to two hours a day back.
You already pay for job software but still run parts of the business on spreadsheets
Choose: It depends. Keep the software. Build the missing piece and connect it, rather than replacing what works.
What we won't hide.
- We build custom software, so we're not neutral.
- We also built and sell DoorOps, job software for door contractors. If we suggest it, we have a stake in that recommendation.
- A custom system needs looking after. Budget for support, not just the build.
- Prices checked 28 September 2026 and exclude VAT.
Questions before you choose build or buy.
01 Can you connect a custom tool to the job software we already use?
Often, where the software lets other systems in through an API or exports. We check what access is available before quoting.
02 What does a first custom project look like?
One job that wastes the most time, such as turning drawings into paint notes or matching supplier invoices. We build that, check it with the people who do the work, and only then look at the next one.
03 Who looks after it once it's built?
We do, on a monthly support arrangement, or we hand it over with documentation if you have someone in-house.
