The real-world calls.

01

You're starting out and just need to be online this month

Choose: Freelance web designer. A simple, tidy site from a good local designer does the job. Come back when you need it to win work.

02

Your business depends on new enquiries or online sales, and your current site brings in nothing

Choose: Web design agency. Customers check you out before they ring or buy. The site has to answer their questions and prove you can do the job.

03

Your budget is well under £5,950

Choose: Freelance web designer. We'd rather tell you now. A freelance designer or a DIY site builder is the sensible choice until the budget is there.

04

You already have a designer you trust and just need more enquiries

Choose: It depends. Keep them. Add SEO work on top rather than paying for a new site you don't need.

What we won't hide.

  • We are a web agency, so we're not neutral. We've tried to say plainly when the other option is better.
  • Prices checked 28 September 2026 and exclude VAT. Freelance prices vary widely, and there are plenty of very good freelance designers.
  • The results below are from named clients. Your results depend on your market, your buyers and how much work you already get from word of mouth.

Questions before you choose build or buy.

01 Is an agency worth it for a small business?

Only if the website needs to win work. If most of your work comes from a few regular customers, a simple site may be enough. If you want new enquiries or online sales, the site has to be planned around the people you want to reach, and that is where the extra cost goes.

02 What should a small business website have on it?

A page for each service or product range, photos of real work, reviews, clear prices where you can give them, and a phone number that is easy to find on a phone. For trade and manufacturing firms, add accreditations and capacity.

03 Can I change who builds my website without losing my Google rankings?

Yes, if the move is planned. Keep the pages that rank, redirect old addresses to the new ones and check Search Console after launch. We do this as part of every rebuild.
