Engineering Drawing Extraction & BOM Automation for Manufacturers
Turn CAD drawings and PDF cut lists into structured, usable data automatically. We build OCR + LLM pipelines that extract dimensions, materials, and bill-of-materials information so your team stops re-keying drawings into the system.
The hidden tax of drawings in fabrication.
Every job starts with a drawing or a cut list. Whether it comes from the customer as a PDF, from your own CAD, or from a subcontractor, someone has to read it, interpret it, and get the information into your system — part numbers, quantities, materials, dimensions, special instructions.
In many shops this is still a manual process. People print drawings, highlight dimensions, type quantities into spreadsheets or the ERP, and then walk the information to the shop floor. It is slow, error-prone, and it scales badly when the business gets busier.
Kingsland Fabrications was spending serious time on exactly this.
What we built in production
One of the first AI layers we added for Kingsland was an automated drawing and cut-list extraction pipeline.
PDF drawings and Excel-style cut lists are dropped into a folder or emailed. The system:
- Runs OCR tuned for engineering drawings and tables
- Uses a language model to understand the structure (this dimension applies to that part, this material callout applies to these lines)
- Outputs clean, structured data (part name, quantity, material, thickness, finish, etc.)
- Feeds it directly into their job system or creates the paint note / cut list automatically
The most visible win for them was the paint note automation. What used to take a supervisor up to two hours a day reading drawings and writing paint instructions is now largely automatic. The supervisor spends that time fabricating and checking quality instead of doing data entry.
Why this is harder than generic document AI
Engineering drawings are not clean invoices. They contain:
- Dimensions scattered across views
- Material callouts in different formats
- Revision clouds and notes that change meaning
- Tables that are not simple rows and columns
- Customer-specific ways of specifying finishes and tolerances
A general document AI usually fails here or requires so much human correction that the time saving disappears. The system has to be trained on the actual drawings your customers and your own team produce.
Business impact
When drawing data lands in the system correctly and quickly:
- Jobs start faster
- Less time is wasted on the shop floor because of missing information
- Fewer errors reach the customer
- The person who used to spend hours interpreting drawings can do higher-value work
This is exactly the kind of repetitive, rules-based but visually complex work that AI is exceptionally good at — once you build it for your actual drawings and processes.
Is this relevant to your business?
If your team is regularly:
- Re-typing information from customer drawings or cut lists
- Manually creating paint notes, cut lists, or material requisitions
- Chasing clarifications because something was mis-read from a PDF
…then this pattern is very likely costing you real hours every week.
We start these projects the same way we started with Kingsland: we look at your actual drawings and documents, understand the current manual flow, and build the smallest version that removes the biggest chunk of drudgery.
The work is already running in a real UK fabrication company. We can show you exactly what good looks like.
