Google Ads Lead Quality: Check Before Spending More

Google Ads generating enquiries but few sales? Check lead quality, conversion tracking, landing pages and follow-up before committing to a bigger advertising budget.

Google Ads lead quality matters more than a busy conversion column. If the dashboard reports thirty enquiries but your team can quote for only six, the cost of winning useful work looks different from the cost of collecting a form submission.

Before increasing the budget, follow a few real enquiries from the ad to the outcome. That often reveals whether the problem sits in targeting, the landing page, the tracking or the way the business responds. It is part of how we approach PPC and digital marketing.

Decide what a useful enquiry looks like

“Lead” needs a definition that your marketing and sales teams share. For a local installer, it might mean someone in the service area asking for a job you actually undertake. For a fabrication business, it might require a workable specification. For a salon, a completed appointment booking may be more useful than a question about opening hours.

Record a small set of outcomes: duplicate or spam, unsuitable, awaiting contact, qualified, quoted and won. Add a short reason when a lead is unsuitable. Wrong location, wrong service and a budget mismatch suggest different fixes.

Keep “we have not contacted them yet” separate from “poor-quality lead”. Marketing cannot fairly assess an enquiry that has sat unanswered for a week. Equally, a friendly conversation is not automatically a viable sales opportunity.

Check what the advertising account calls a conversion

A click on “Get a quote” is an expression of interest. A successfully submitted enquiry is a different event. A qualified opportunity and an agreed job are later stages again.

Trace one test enquiry through the system. Does a conversion happen only after the action succeeds? Can a refresh count it again? Does the CRM import duplicate an event already counted on the website? Our guide to checking whether your website is working gives the wider measurement context.

Google supports qualified-lead and converted-lead goals, allowing later business outcomes to inform measurement. Define those stages for your own sales process: a label in Google Ads does not automatically mean a paid invoice.

Review which actions guide bidding. Google’s primary and secondary conversion guidance explains that primary actions can be used for bidding when their standard goal is selected. Secondary actions are normally observational, but custom goals are an exception. Check the actual campaign configuration before assuming an event is harmless because it is marked secondary.

Compare costs using the same stage

Consider this fictional example. A campaign spends £600 and produces thirty enquiries. That is £20 per enquiry. If six meet your qualification criteria, the cost per qualified lead is £100.

Neither number alone tells you whether the campaign is profitable. You still need to know how many jobs are won, the value and margin of those jobs, and what it costs to handle them. Compare campaigns at equivalent stages and over a period long enough for enquiries to become orders.

Avoid treating a handful of results as a reliable benchmark. A commercial installation with a long decision process will not behave like a same-day appointment. There is no single “good” cost per lead that applies to every Happy Webs client.

Use rejection reasons to choose the next change

If enquiries consistently request a service you do not offer, review the search terms, advertising message and page content. If they come from outside your area, inspect location settings alongside the wording that tells visitors where you work.

If visitors misunderstand the offer, improve the landing page and website before paying for more visits. Show the service, relevant proof, coverage and the information someone needs to decide whether to enquire.

If suitable leads go cold after the form arrives, review response ownership and follow-up. A reminder or quote follow-up workflow may help once a quotation has been issued. More advertising will not repair a disconnected inbox.

When using enhanced conversions for leads, validate the later-stage data before relying on it. Google’s customer-data policies cover permitted data, disclosures and required consent. Hashing contact information does not remove those responsibilities.

Make a decision you can explain

Choose the next change from the evidence: correct the tracking, narrow a misleading promise, improve the page, speed up the response or increase spending on an offer that is already producing suitable work. Record what changed so you can assess it later.

SEO can support demand over time alongside paid campaigns; our Google Ads versus SEO guide explains their different roles. Neither channel benefits from reporting activity without understanding the outcome.

If your reports look better than your order book, ask us to review your marketing. We will work through the journey from enquiry to sale and identify which part needs attention first.
